Basic Life Support (BSL)

Qualification Overview

This qualification aimed at providing learners with the necessary knowledge, understanding and skills to support life in the workplace.

The qualification on completion is valid for a period of 2 years, after which learners are expected to requalify. It is also recommended that annual refresher training takes place to ensure knowledge and skills are maintained.

  • Understand the role and responsibilities of a first aider
  • Know how to assess an incident
  • Be able to manage an unresponsive casualty who is breathing normally
  • Be able to manage a casualty who is not breathing normally and unresponsive
  • know how to recognise and assist a casualty who is choking
  • Know how to recognise and assist a casualty with a minor injury
  • Know how to manage a casualty who is in shock

This qualification is assessed by practical assessment
